Workshop

Djuna Day Studio rents full- and part-time workshop space to independent furniture makers and artists.

Shop Culture

The workshop is an evolving group of half a dozen furniture makers and artists. We value craft and quality, and are readily willing to share our knowledge and techniques. We each run our own businesses or work on our own projects. That said, we often assist each other, collaborate on ideas, share clamps and advice, and lend an extra hand when needed. Turnover is low so we all get to know each other’s work. It’s a nice place to be.

Djuna keeps the shop very well organized and maintained. Besides all the great machinery, the environment and atmosphere is respectful and pleasant to be a part of. Coming from previous co-op wood shops, it is fair to say that this is definitely one of the best workshops I have ever been a part of.

Equipment

The studio is equipped with an array of traditional woodworking machinery. This includes:  a 5 hp industrial table saw, 12” jointer, 20” planer, 17” band saw, radial arm saw, drill press, 48” edge sander, lathe, and full dust collection.  The machinery is well maintained and the shop is clean and organized.  There is lumber and sheet good storage.  Renters have access to all the shop’s shared machinery.   Everyone supplies their own hand tools and handheld power tools.

People

We are a group of independant furniture makers, wood turners, and sculptors. We are Sheridan grads, Humber grads, self-taught woodworkers, artists, and hobbyists each looking for dedicated space in a shared and collaborative professional woodshop.

Djuna Day Studio is a queer-positive space.

Location

The workshop is located in the Six Points neighbourhood of Etobicoke, a large industrial area between Islington and Kipling Avenues, just south of Bloor. It is within walking distance of the Islington TTC Station. There are no fancy coffee shops, no imminent condos.  The building features 24-hour access, plenty of parking, an overhead door, and ground floor access. The workshop is secure and the neighbourhood is safe.
